1. Your garage door lifts unevenly or jerks while opening

What a Cable Drum Does and How It Wears Out

The cable drums sit at either end of the torsion shaft above your door. As the spring unwinds, the cable winds into grooves machined into the drum, and that is what actually lifts the door. They are simple, they are under constant load, and they wear.

What wears is the groove. Years of a steel cable winding and unwinding under tension polishes and then scores it. Once the groove is rough, it starts abrading the cable rather than seating it, and the cable frays from the inside. That is why a chewed drum and a frayed cable almost always show up together.

Signs a Garage Door Drum Needs Replacing

  • Cable fraying repeatedly on the same side
  • Visible scoring, burrs or a widened groove on the drum face
  • The cable riding up over the groove or bunching on the drum
  • One side of the door lifting ahead of the other
  • A grinding or ticking noise from the top corner as the door travels

The uneven-lift symptom is the important one. A drum that is not winding cable at the same rate as its opposite number pulls the door out of square, and a door out of square wears rollers, binds in the track and loads the opener badly.

Drums are replaced in pairs and the door has to be unloaded to do it. That means the torsion spring gets wound down first, which is the genuinely dangerous part of this job and the reason it is not a homeowner repair.

Because the door has to come apart anyway, drums are almost always done alongside cables and frequently alongside springs. Doing all three at once costs materially less than three separate visits, and it resets the whole lifting assembly at the same time. Frequently Asked Questions About Garage Door Drums

What does a garage door cable drum actually do?

It converts the torsion spring's rotation into lift. The cable winds into grooves on the drum as the spring unwinds, and that is what raises the door. There is one at each end of the shaft.

Do drums have to be replaced in pairs?

Yes. They wear at the same rate and they have to wind at matching rates, otherwise the door lifts unevenly and goes out of square.

Can I replace a garage door drum myself?

We would strongly advise against it. The torsion spring has to be unwound before the drum can come off the shaft, and unwinding a loaded torsion spring without proper winding bars is how people get badly hurt.

My cable keeps fraying on the same side. Why?

Almost always a scored drum groove abrading it. Replacing the cable without replacing the drum means you will be replacing the cable again.

Should I replace springs at the same time as drums?

Often it makes sense. The spring has to be unwound for the drum work regardless, so if the spring is near end of life the incremental labor is small compared to booking a second visit later.
