Solar setups have their own failure curve. A lot of gates on acreage in New River, Cave Creek and out toward Wickenburg run on solar with a battery bank. Sun is not the problem here. Panel dust and battery age are, and both are quiet failures until the gate simply stops one morning.

The reason this matters: several of those are inexpensive parts. An operator that hums and will not move is not automatically a new operator, and we would rather test the cheap causes first.

On an HOA gate the operator is usually paired with an access control system: a keypad, a telephone entry unit with a resident directory, a card or fob reader, and in-ground loops for both the entry and exit lanes. A failure anywhere in that chain reads to residents as “the gate is broken,” even when the operator is fine. Sorting out which part actually failed is most of the work.
The other difference is that it is never one person’s decision. There is a board, a property manager, and a few hundred residents who all noticed. What that means practically is that you want the gate secured and moving on the first visit even if the permanent fix needs a part ordered, and you want a written account of what failed and what it costs before anyone has to take it to a meeting.

Commercial operators run bigger duty cycles than a home gate. A residential driveway gate might cycle six times a day. A storage facility gate can cycle two hundred times, and everything wears on that schedule instead: rollers, chain, drive gears, the loop sealant in the driveway. What looks like premature failure is usually just a residential-grade expectation applied to a commercial-grade cycle count.

What decides it is usually age, parts availability and how many times you have already been out there.
Repair makes sense when the operator is under roughly ten years old, the failure is a board, a battery, a safety device or a loop, and the mechanical side is sound. Those are parts, and parts are the cheaper end of this.
Replacement starts making sense when the operator is old enough that boards are no longer made for it, when the gearbox or motor itself has gone, or when you are on your third repair in two years. At that point you are paying to keep an obsolete unit alive.
What moves the price on a replacement: swing versus slide, the weight and length of the gate, whether it is single or dual leaf, whether you need battery backup or solar, and what access control has to be carried over or rebuilt. A dual swing gate with telephone entry is a different job from a single slide gate with a remote.
We quote the number before the work starts. If the honest answer is that your gate needs a fabricator rather than an operator, you will hear that instead of a quote.
