Reinforcement Strut Repair in Cave Creek

This Cave Creek door needed new reinforcement struts, the horizontal steel braces that keep the panels from bowing as the door rolls up into the ceiling. Our tech picked up the correct struts at our shop and came back to install them. Struts matter most on wide double doors, where a bent or missing strut lets panels flex and crack over time.

Torn Bottom Seal Replaced in Phoenix

The rubber seal on the bottom of this Phoenix garage door had torn loose and was hanging into the track (pictured). A damaged bottom seal lets in dust, heat and bugs, and a loose piece can snag on the rollers. We installed a new T-style bottom seal to close the gap at the floor. Phoenix sun dries out and cracks door rubber faster than almost anywhere, so it's worth a quick check every summer.

Mouse-Chewed Sensor Wires in Wickenburg

A Wickenburg homeowner's garage door wouldn't close. Our tech found that mice had chewed through the safety sensor wires. Without a working sensor, the opener refuses to close the door, which is exactly what it's designed to do. We spliced the wiring, got the door closing again, and did a safety inspection. In rural and desert areas, rodents chewing low-voltage wires is a common cause of sudden opener problems.

Tracking Down a Squeak in Peoria

This Peoria door ran smoothly but squeaked on the way down, and the homeowner couldn't find the source. Our tech traced it to a seized end bearing, the part that holds the torsion tube at each end of the door, along with rattling rollers. We replaced the end bearing plates, and the door now runs smoothly and quietly.

A day after our opener was installed, we had issues with the sensors. We contacted Garage Door Grunts and with no questions asked said they would send Koby back over. He did a reset and got things back in working order. I am incredibly impressed with this company. They stand beyond the work they do and that goes a long way with me. Such a rarity these days.

They responded quickly to my broken 22-yo garage door opener, and we reviewed everything thoroughly before any work was started. There were NO surprises. Jack worked hard in the AZ heat, and my garage was clean when he left. Also, the warranty was clearly explained and the details are included on the invoice. I definitely recommend Garage Door Grunts.

Adrian from Garage Door Grunts provided excellent service from start to finish. He communicated clearly, patiently answered all my questions, and made sure I understood everything. He even helped set up the app on my phone for my new garage door opener and showed me how to use it before leaving. His attention to detail and genuine care made the experience exceptional. I’m thrilled with my new opener and would highly recommend Adrian and Garage Door Grunts!

Warning signs

Top Signs You Might Need A Garage Door Cable Replacement

1. Your garage door looks uneven or crooked

If one side of your garage door hangs lower than the other, it’s a strong indicator that one of the cables has frayed or snapped. This imbalance can strain the entire system and make your door unsafe to operate.

2. The garage door won’t open or close smoothly

Cables help control the door’s movement and balance. When they’re worn or loose, the door may jerk, hesitate, or stop midway. Replacing damaged cables ensures smooth, even motion and prevents further mechanical wear.

3. You notice frayed or worn cables

If you can see visible fraying, rust, or corrosion along the cables, it’s time to replace them. Damaged cables are a safety risk — they can snap suddenly under tension and cause the door to fall unexpectedly.

4. The door has come off its track

A snapped or loose cable can cause the garage door to slip off its track, leaving it crooked, jammed, or stuck. This is not only a major inconvenience but also a serious safety hazard that requires immediate professional repair.

5. The garage door slams shut or won’t stay open

If your door drops too quickly or can’t hold its open position, the cables may have lost tension or failed completely. Replacing them restores balance and prevents further damage to the springs, opener, and tracks.

Straight answers

Garage Door Cable Replacement: What Phoenix Homeowners Ask

Snapped a Cable? Stop Using the Door

A garage door cable carries the door's weight between the spring and the bottom bracket. When one lets go, the load transfers instantly to the other side. The door goes crooked, it can jam in the track, and in the worst case it comes down hard.

Do not run the opener to "see if it still works." Forcing a door with one cable off will bend the track, twist the bottom section and turn a modest repair into a much larger one. Pull the release cord, leave the door where it is, and get somebody out.

If the door came all the way off its track when the cable went, that is a combined job and we would look at track repair at the same time. If the car is trapped inside, say so when you call and we will treat it as emergency garage door repair.

Why Garage Door Cables Fail

Cables are steel aircraft wire and they do not fail randomly. There is almost always a cause worth finding, because replacing the cable without fixing the cause just buys you a few months.

  • A worn cable drum. The grooves the cable winds into wear over time. A rough drum saws through the cable. If the drum is chewed, the drum gets replaced too or the new cable goes the same way.
  • A broken or fatigued spring. When the spring stops carrying the weight, the cable takes it. That is the most common sequence we see, and it is why we check the springs on every cable call.
  • Misalignment. A door that is out of square makes the cable track off centre and rub.
  • Age and rust. Less of an issue in dry Phoenix air than in humid climates, but a garage that gets swamp cooler runoff or monsoon water will corrode a cable at the bottom bracket.

Upfront pricing

Cable Repair or Cable Replacement, and What It Costs

Cables are not repaired. A frayed cable is a failed cable, and splicing one is not a thing a competent shop will do. They are replaced in pairs, because the other side has taken identical cycles and identical load.

What moves the price is what else the failure took with it. A clean cable replacement on a door with sound springs and good drums is a straightforward visit. If the spring went first, or the drums are grooved, or the door is off its track, those get handled at the same time because the door has to come apart either way.

Our service call is $49.95 and you get the full number in writing before work starts. We run cable calls across the entire Valley, and most are finished on the first visit because the trucks carry cable, drums and common spring sizes.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Garage Door Cables

Can a broken garage door cable be repaired?

No. A frayed or snapped cable is replaced, not repaired, and always in pairs. The opposite cable has taken the same number of cycles and the same load, so replacing one and leaving the other means a second failure is coming.

Is it safe to use my garage door with a broken cable?

No. With one cable gone the door is being held unevenly and can jam or drop. Pull the release cord, leave it alone, and call. Running the opener is how a cable job becomes a bent track and a twisted bottom section.

Why did my garage door cable break?

Most often a worn cable drum sawing at it, or a spring that failed first and dumped the door's weight onto the cable. Occasionally misalignment or corrosion at the bottom bracket. We find the cause, because a new cable on an old cause fails again.

How long does garage door cable replacement take?

A straightforward pair of cables is typically under an hour. If the spring failed first or the drums are chewed, it takes longer because those get handled in the same visit.

Do you replace both cables or just the broken one?

Both. They are the same age, same cycles, same load. Replacing one is a false economy.
